📬 Important Property Tax Payment Update
The U.S. Postal Service recently changed how and when mail is postmarked. Postmarks are now applied at regional sorting centers, rather than when the mail is first collected. This means:
➡️ Your envelope may receive a postmark several days after you place it in your mailbox.
➡️ If a payment is postmarked after the deadline, it is legally considered late, even if you mailed it on time.
Because timely tax payment depends on the USPS postmark, residents who plan to mail their property taxes should:
✔ Mail payments early — do not wait until right before the deadline
✔ Consider physically bringing your payment into the post office and asking them to hand-cancel (postmark) it at the counter
✔ Use certified mail if you would like proof of the mailing date
🚫 A Note About Online Bank Bill-Pay Services
Payments sent through a personal bank’s online bill-pay system are not sent electronically. Banks often mail those payments in bulk with others, which can result in:
• Longer delivery times
• Late arrival past the deadline
• Payments being classified as delinquent, even though they were scheduled earlier
If you choose to use bank bill-pay, please schedule it well in advance of the deadline to allow time for USPS delivery.
