Onion River Dam Drawdown Approved
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has approved a temporary drawdown of the Onion River (Waldo) Dam. This means the Waldo Mill Pond will be lowered by about six feet to allow for needed maintenance, including tree removal around the pond.
Key Points:
* The drawdown will begin this fall and must be completed by October 15, 2025.
* The pond will remain lowered through the winter and early spring. Water levels will not be refilled until after April 15, 2026.
* The water will be lowered and refilled gradually to protect the river and surrounding habitat.
What This Means for Residents:
* Because the pond will be almost completely lowered, activities such as fishing, skating, and snowmobiling will not be possible this winter.
* The Onion River will continue to flow through the pond area, but it will appear much smaller than usual.
* The drawdown is necessary to complete maintenance that helps preserve the long-term health and safety of the pond and dam.
The official DNR approval letter is attached for those who would like more details.
We appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation while this important work is completed.Temporary Drawdown October 2025
